As a dietetic intern, you are embarking on a rewarding and challenging journey towards becoming a registered dietitian. The internship period can be a bit overwhelming, as you are expected to learn a lot in a short amount of time while balancing practical and theoretical aspects of the program. However, with the right mindset and approach, you can make the most of your internship and set yourself up for success.
Here are some tips to help you make the most of your dietetic internship:
1. Stay organized
One of the keys to success during your internship is staying organized. Make sure you have a planner or calendar that you can use to keep track of deadlines, appointments, and other important dates. This will help you stay on top of your work and avoid missing any important assignments or meetings. I personally kept a notebook documenting my day to day experiences during my internship. Specifically, I'd note the rotation type (ICU, medicine, oncology), what happened that day, any medications or supplements that popped up so I could look them up later, and what I did well as well as where I could've improved. It is a very humbling experience to read back at a later date.
2. Network with your peers and mentors
Networking is an important part of any career, and the dietetics field is no exception. Take advantage of your internship to build relationships with your peers, mentors, and other professionals in the field. Attend networking events and participate in online forums or discussions related to dietetics. These connections can be valuable resources for you as you move forward in your career.
3. Ask questions
Don’t be afraid to ask questions during your internship. Whether it’s about a specific assignment or a topic you’re unsure of, asking questions can help you better understand the material and improve your overall knowledge. Your mentors and peers are there to help you and answer any questions you may have, so take advantage of their expertise.
4. Be proactive
Take an active approach to your learning and seek out opportunities to gain hands-on experience. This could include volunteering or seeking paid part time work at a community nutrition program, shadowing a dietitian in private practice, or seeking out additional learning opportunities outside of your regular internship program. Being proactive in your learning will help you stand out and demonstrate your commitment to the field. Also - it looks fantastic on a resume.
5. Practice self-care
Balancing the demands of an internship can be stressful, so it’s important to take care of yourself. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and taking breaks when you need them. Additionally, consider incorporating physical activity and stress-reducing activities into your routine. Taking care of yourself will help you stay focused and energized during your internship.

In conclusion, being a dietetic intern is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and build the skills you need to become a successful registered dietitian. By staying organized, networking with your peers and mentors, asking questions, being proactive in your learning, and taking care of yourself, you can make the most of your internship and set yourself up for success. Good luck!
